Whitaker Hackamore with sheepskin noseband

: The hackamore has a powerful leverage effect on the nape of the neck. It frees the horse's mouth 100%. However, it has a greater effect on the nose, the lower jaw (with the curb chain) and the nape of the neck (depending on the length of the prongs). Its severity is due to the pressure it exerts on the fragile bones of the bridge of the nose. Its action can be softened or hardened depending on the choice of curb chain. 

The hackamore is now seen on show jumping circuits, sometimes in combination with a single bit to combine the two actions. In all cases, it requires a light, experienced hand. The hackamore has a strong action, as the prongs are long.
